INTRODUCTION

What is the purpose of the platform?

The Energy Intelligence Group website, located under new.energyintel.com, strive to be the web’s most comprehensive and authoritative source of high quality information and analysis on the energy industry.
It is designed to give you a truly global view of the most important developments in the energy industry. The long-established tradition of Energy Intelligence publications for broad, insightful, and concise news and analysis forms the core value of the platform.

Who is the site for, just Energy Intelligence subscribers or can others use it too?

The site can be used both by subscribers to Energy Intelligence publications and by non-subscribers. The site provides free access to a select amount of high quality news and analysis, including headlines and summaries from all of the Energy Intelligence publications. Moreover, through our new resource, the Knowledge Center, anyone registered can access valuable content and reference tools.
Through subscriptions or, in the case of non-subscribing registered users, the pay-per-article access option, users can also quickly tap into the full information resources of the Energy Intelligence Group.

How is the site organized?

The site is organized to provide easy access to the full suite of Energy Intelligence products and services via inter-linked microsites. This includes the Knowledge Center, Forums, Interactive, Research, Advisory, and most prominently:
Energy Intelligence Group
Our corporate homepage where you can find information about all of our group-wide products and services.
Energy Intelligence Newsroom
Provides immediate access to all our subscription content. It also provides an extremely valuable sampling of Energy Intelligence information that is designed to keep users constantly updated on the most important developments in the international energy world.
This new homepage is designed to be fully customizable so you can filter out the noise and receive just the information you need. You can also organize the layout of your homepage to reflect your needs and change it as those needs evolve.
The site also contains landing, or “home,” pages for each Energy Intelligence publication or service. These homepages allow the user to focus on particular areas of interest and tap into the latest news or features available from a particular newsletter or service.
The site also supports other key features such as subscriptions, trials, pay-per-article, advanced search and archives, among others.

NEWSROOM HOMEPAGE

How does the new.energyintel.com homepage work?

The new.energyintel.com homepage serves two roles: an easy and intuitive way to organize the tools and services that matter most to you and a convenient way to navigate the rest of the site.
1) It provides a quick and valuable snapshot of the latest developments and key data in the world of oil and gas, with updates appearing throughout the day. Our content is organized into easy-to-view windows, or “portlets,” that can be customized and even moved around the page as you wish.
Once, as a registered user, you have logged on, you can simply click on the ‘customize’ button on our tool bar at the bottom of the browser window to view your options.
2) The homepage also provides intuitive access to all the services of the site through a set of navigation links across the top and in a bar floating at the bottom of the page. The floating bar is a convenient entryway into the wide variety of Energy Intelligence’s capabilities – whether they be publications, customized news services, data, events, audio and video reports, or research and advisory services.

What news and analysis is available on the homepage?

In short, all of it. Our homepage provides a concise and complete picture of what is happening in the industry. With its regular updates, the page is designed to give all visitors a quick summary, though registered and subscriber visitors will be able to access the information in greater depth.
Some examples of what you will see are:
EI Latest News
Displays all the latest content from across the Energy Intelligence platform. Simply click on the individual headlines within the portlet to view the full content.
World Watch
Our daily commentary, written by any one of a number of our experts, on the most important developments around the world of energy.
Prices
Key oil and gas price information from the global markets.
EI Blogs
The latest posts from our issue-specific blogs.

What are content portlets?

Content portlets are the customizable content windows that display our news, research, data, tools, and analysis. These are dynamically updated. For instance, news-related portlets display new headlines and reports as soon as they are filed by our staff.
Portlets can be moved around the Newsroom by a simple click and drag. They also can be opened and closed with one click. These easy manipulations allow you to customize the layout of your page – and the customizations will be saved so that they’re in place when you next visit the page.

What are the navigational tools on the homepage?

News Ticker [top of browser window]
Up-to-the-minute scrolling headlines from Energy Intelligence and benchmark prices. Fixed to the top of your browser window, the ticker is always visible but can be made still by clicking on the pause button. If you’re a subscriber, to view a story behind a particular headline, simply click on the headline.
Quick Search [top right]
Allows you to enter a keyword or string of words and find all references to them in the full text and headlines from the last three months of all Energy Intelligence publications. For example, if you want to find all the recent news on Shell, just type “Shell” into the box and hit enter.
Masthead with Main Navigation [top]
The “EI” logo serves as a ‘home’ button. The main navigation menu provides links to find out more about Energy Intelligence its products and services, as well as quick access to some of the main functional features of the site, such as sophisticated searching of Energy Intelligence’s extensive historical archives through the Advanced Search link.
Login [right side of masthead]
Subscriber login and ‘Forgot password’ link

In addition to the quick summary of the latest news and developments provided on the Energy Intelligence homepage (see details under homepage), new.energyintel.com also provides free access to all current headlines and selected summaries of articles for all Energy Intelligence publications on the homepage of each individual publication.

News Ticker: fixed to the top of your browser window is our scrolling news ticker that displays the latest headlines from across Energy Intelligence.

EI Blogs: Portlet:View the latest postings from our issue-specific blogs.

How do I use Quick Search?

Quick Search lets you search throughout the last three months of Energy Intelligence publications on a specific word or phrase. The search covers both the headlines and full text of all published articles. The results automatically pop up in a new screen. The search results include both stories to which you have access as a subscriber (marked with a green tick) and headlines of stories from other sources available on a pay-per-article basis.

How do I use the Advanced Search function?

Energy Intelligence has built in a sophisticated full-text search engine to allow clients to query an extensive archive of over 50,000 articles from more than 2,500 back issues. The Advanced Search function allows you to search on the following criteria:
- A key word or phrase
- The date an article was published
- Words and phrases in the full text of the article, just the headline, or both
You can sort the results chronologically i.e. by date published using “Sort Order” and have the option of how many results will show per page “Display Results per Page.” Once you hit search, the results will automatically pop up in a new screen. The search results will include both stories to which you have access as a subscriber (marked with a green tick) and other articles from other sources that fit the search criteria. To view a story, click on the headline and the full text will come up if you are a subscriber. If you select a headline to which you do not have access, you will be prompted to take a trial or to purchase the story using a pay-per-article option. In addition to keyword searches of the full text and headlines, the search engine also has the capability to search the archive according to specific categories and classifications for each article that is set by Energy Intelligence editors. This allows the search to be focused on the group of articles that the editors judge to be most relevant to a particular topic and thus the results of the search are likely to be more highly refined than a search of the full archive.
To further define a search:
- select the news services to be included (this could include both services to which you subscribe as well as those to which you don’t)
- select a specific country
- select specific companies
- select specific categories
For example, you can build a Search to include all the articles published in World Gas Intelligence and Natural Gas Week (from Select Publications) pertaining to Mexico (from Select Countries) which involve BP (from Select Companies). There are three sets of pre-defined categories that are routinely applied to articles. These involve countries, which are presented in alphabetical order, companies, which present the main oil and gas firms in alphabetical order, and a list of functional categories that apply to different segments of the industry or particular topics. All of these category classifications for individual stories involve judgments by editors and reporters as they produce the article.
A couple of important caveats apply to category searches of the archives, and visitors are advised to only use this functionality for searches of very recent periods. The category classifications have been implemented consistently beginning in early 2001, and thus searches that go back to earlier periods will likely generate fewer results. Any search that goes back prior to 2001 should be done without the category limits.

Allows you to program the system to generate a custom email alert when a relevant publication or article has been posted to the site. Click on the ‘Customize’ button located on our floating bar at the bottom of every page and create your custom Alert based on words, phrases, publication, date, company, country, or other categories. These Alerts will be sent as an email notifying you of newly published material based on the criteria you selected. By using Saved Alert you can also access this pre-targeted information while visiting the site.

USER ACCESS: SUBCRIBERS

What special features are available to subscribers?

By subscribing, you will gain access to such valuable features as hypertext links to related stories and access to archives.

How do the hypertext links to related stories work?

Most Energy Intelligence stories contain references to related articles from back issues of that newsletter or from other Energy Intelligence publications. In digital versions of our publications these references are live hypertext links. By clicking on the links, you instantly bring up the related story.
This provides users with quick access to a valuable depth of background information. The functionality of these links, however, depends on the breadth of your subscriptions. If you are not a subscriber to the newsletter referred to in the link, you will be prompted to purchase the related story using a pay-per-article option. If you are a subscriber to the newsletter, you will have automatic access to all of the more recent back issue stories. If you click on a link that goes back earlier than the automatic access period, you will be prompted to purchase the related story using a pay-per-article option. The extent of this access varies by newsletter. If you want complete access to all back issues of the newsletter to which you subscribe, you must upgrade your regular web subscription to a full archive subscription.

What is the Workbench?

The Workbench is the place where you can save favorites and annotate articles.
Favorites: any item of content across our platform, whether an article, report, webinar, or video can be saved to your own favorites folder in the Workbench for you to access whenever you log in. Create specific folders for different types of content so you can always keep track of the stories and reports that are important to you and your business.
Annotate Article: sometimes just adding an article to your Workbench is not quite enough, and you want to add your own insight and comments. Our innovative annotation feature allows you to do just that.
1. save an article to your Favorites folder
2. open the Favorites tab in the workbench
3. select the article you wish to annotate and click on the Annotate icon
4. this will open a text editor window at the bottom of the article where you can add your own comments
5. once finished, click save and you will have a PDF document that you can download
Note: you cannot edit or amend the actual published article, and annotations are clearly marked with the name of the subscriber.
Save to Desktop: you can save an article, report, or annotated article from your favorites folder to your desktop by simply clicking on the save to desktop icon.

What is Customization and how does it work?

Web subscribers to Energy Intelligence services not only gain full access to the current issues of their newsletters and recent back issues, they also can enhance their use of Energy Intelligence information with Cutomization tools that allow the user to focus on the exact information that is of interest to them. This Customization involves the use of a number of tools described below. Subscribers to the print or e-mail versions of Energy Intelligence newsletters can gain access to these special features by converting to a web subscription.

What are instant e-mail notifications of publication updates?

Every time that a new issue is published, subscribers are notified by e-mail with a message that contains a full list of headlines and links to the web site. This service makes sure you do not miss important articles as soon as they are available.

What are Energy Intelligence Alerts and how do they work?

While subscribers receive e-mail notifications when issues of their publication are available, they can also refine these alerts to focus them on the specific information that they need. Alerts let you manage your information flow by alerting you whenever a new story is posted to the site on a certain criteria.
To set an alert:
1. Click on the ‘Customize’ button located on our floating bar at the bottom of every page
2. Select ‘Alert’ tab
3. Select the news services to be included (this could include both services to which you have access as well as those to which you do not)
4. Select a specific country; and/or specific companies; and/or specific categories
For example, you can build up an Alert to include all the articles published in Petroleum Intelligence Weekly, Energy Compass, and the Energy Intelligence Briefing service (from Select Publications) pertaining to Venezuela (from Select Countries). You could also create an Alert for articles on a specific company or group of companies (from Select Companies) or you could focus your alert on a specific functional category such as Oil Supply (from Select Categories). These categories can also be combined, but that can significantly narrow the focus of the alerts.
The various topics that are used to generate these alerts are assigned by reporters and editors as they create the articles, and thus they are not comprehensive but instead focus on the most important stories. Once you have created your alert, you can save this as part of your personal profile.

You can amend your alerts at any time.
You can also view the information generated by the alerts by selecting them from your ‘Saved Alerts.’ The results will be displayed as they would be from a search.

USER ACCESS: PROTECTED PDF

What is a Protected PDF?

Energy Intelligence uses “Protected PDF” – an easy-to-use secure publishing format – to present some of our products online.

What software do I need to be able to read a Protected PDF?

To access the document, you must be using Adobe Reader version 6.01 or above. Non-Adobe Readers (e.g, Foxit Reader or Apple Preview) cannot open a Protected PDF. If you are using Adobe Reader version 8 or above, you may also need to change one setting in the Reader preferences (click here for details).

How do I access a Protected PDF?

Opening the publication is a quick and simple three-step process.

1. On the cover page of the PDF, type the e-mail address associated with your subscription and click “Login.”

All other pages are protected until after you login.

On the cover page, type in the e-mail address for this subscription and click “Login.”

2. The document will briefly connect to the internet to verify the subscription. Click “Allow.” You may see this message two times.

Check the box by “Remember my action…” and you will not see this message again for this or any other Energy Intelligence PDFs.

With a valid e-mail address, the document is unlocked. Click “Yes” to skip the login for this document in the future.

Laptop users should always, before traveling, login once to unlock the document on the computer and choose “Yes” for offline access. Once this is done, an internet connection is not needed to view the PDF. You cannot unlock the document on one computer and read it on another computer without going through this process – it must be unlocked on each device.

3. If prompted, please click “Allow.” The document should then open.

When unlocked, there is no login box on the cover page. Occasionally, the login boxes do not disappear. To rectify this problem, you must simply click “Login” again.

All other pages are now unlocked and ready for reading or printing.

Will I need to login again to access the same Protected PDF a second time?

Usually, it is only necessary to login once for a document on a particular computer. For subsequent attempts, the PDF should open automatically in a fully readable state on that computer whether or not an internet connection is available.

I’m using Adobe Reader version 8 or above and was unable to access the Protected PDF. Is there a way to fix this?

When a protected PDF is opened with Adobe Reader 8 or above, this message may appear.

The document will close and it is not possible to login until a setting is changed in the Reader.

Before trying to open the PDF again, click on the Edit menu and choose “Preferences.”

In the left-hand panel, choose “Javascript.” To the right, uncheck the box next to “Enable global object security policy” and click OK.

You should now be able to open the Protected PDF following the steps listed above.

I’m using Adobe Reader version 9 and was unable to access the Protected PDF. Is there a way to fix this?

Rarely, when a Protected PDF is opened with Adobe Reader 9, a message may appear with “Enhanced Security Block” in the bar at the top.

The document will close and it is not possible to login until a setting is changed in the Reader.

Before trying to open the PDF again, click on the Edit menu and choose “Preferences.”

In the left-hand panel, choose “Security (enhanced).” To the right, uncheck the box next to “Enable enhanced security” and click OK.

You should now be able to open the Protected PDF following the steps listed above.
